Who We Are

Ben Michlig — Owner

Ben got his start in tree work in 2009, grounding for a friend who taught him the fundamentals of safe, tight-space removals. In 2012, he helped launch a tree service in Manitowish Waters and spent the early years learning the trade the hard way — through real experience, real mistakes, and constant improvement.

After several years as a lead climber specializing in difficult removals and efficient production, Ben shifted into full-time operations management and sales in 2019.

In 2023, he negotiated the buyout of Dano’s Tree Service and founded Michlig Tree Service, building on the existing infrastructure and pushing to raise the standard for tree care in the Northwoods.

Today, Ben’s focus is long-term, meaningful property improvement — doing difficult work cleanly, safely, and with a bigger-picture approach to tree and forest management.

Ben and his wife Abbie are part owners of the business and have two young kids. With family roots throughout the area and a lifetime of weekends spent at a Northwoods cabin, Ben is committed to building a company that serves the region for the long haul.

Ben earned a B.S. from the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resource Sciences, with a minor in entomology.

Justin Kertz — Chief Arborist

Justin Kertz holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point with dual majors in Forest Management and Urban Forestry. He is an ISA Certified Arborist and holds the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ). His credentials also include commercial pesticide certifications through both the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture (Right-of-Way and Natural Areas) and the Colorado Department of Agriculture (Ornamental Pest Control).

With more than 22 years of experience working with trees, including four years as the owner and operator of his own tree care company, Justin brings depth and range to every project. His approach centers on balancing the needs of the tree with the objectives of the property owner — applying sound arboricultural principles while remaining practical and results-driven.

At Michlig Tree Service, Justin plays a central role in sales, planning, and field support. He joined the company for its strong reputation, cohesive team, and the opportunity to fully apply his skill set in the Northwoods of Wisconsin — a setting he considers one of the greatest perks of the job.
